The benefits of proper auto maintenance

Preparing Your Car for a Road Trip

With summer on the way, many people are planning road trips. However, before you hit the open road, you want to make certain your car is ready for the long drive. The last thing you want is for your car to break down hundreds of miles from home. Here are a few tips to prepare your car for your next road trip.

Have Repairs Done

If you’ve been putting off any repairs, you need to have them done before you leave. Even minor issues could become a major problem on your trip. For example, while you may not need to run your air conditioner much in your daily life, if you’re driving into warmer weather, you will likely want it to work. Independent Auto Care can take care of any Honda auto repair so you can rest easily knowing that your car will be in top condition during your road trip.

Check and Top Off or Change Fluids

Check all of your fluid levels, including the brake fluid, oil, power steering fluid, and even the windshield wiper fluid. You may need to top off these fluids. While it’s true you can find auto shops across the country where you can buy additional fluid if you need it, it’s always best to have everything topped off before you go.

Check and Change the Filters, Too

In addition to your car’s fluids, don’t forget to check and, if needed, change the filters. This includes your oil filter and any air filters that may need it.

Take a Look at Your Emergency Car Kit

Most people do keep an emergency car kit in their vehicle. However, most drivers don’t look in this kit unless they need something from it. If it has been several months since you used your emergency kit, take a look at it to make sure everything is still up to date. Check any batteries to make sure they still work and look at the expiration date of any items that have one. Replace anything that’s outdated and test any items that you can.

While it’s not a part of your emergency kit, don’t forget to check your spare tire if you have one. Make sure it’s aired up and isn’t showing any major signs of damage. If you have run flag tired, of course, you won’t need to worry about this.
