How to determine what is leaking from your car by the color of the leak

Have you noticed a puddle on your carport where you park your car but are not sure what is leaking? This guide will help you determine what is leaking by the color of the fluid and if you should get it checked out or not.

  • Light brown to black

If the liquid is light brown and thin or thick and dark black, it could be a motor oil leak. If it is light brown and smells like rotten eggs, it may be a lube oil leak. It is best to get these checked out because it could signal an ongoing problem.

  • Light yellow to dark brown

This could be brake fluid, especially if it is slippery to the touch. This should be checked out immediately.

  • Red

Red fluid is usually power steering fluid. You can get this checked out by a professional, and they can tell you if it is a significant issue or not.

  • Orange

If the liquid is orange or reddish-brown and looks like it is coming from the center of your car, it could be transmission fluid. It could also be radiator rust mixed with antifreeze, but this leak would be in various locations. If you can’t determine which one it is, take your vehicle to a professional to be safe.

  • Yellow, green or pink

Bright colored leaks are usually coolant leaks. If your car is older and leaking a little bit of coolant, it’s not a big deal. If your vehicle is newer and you notice this leak, you should probably get it checked out.

  • Clear

If the leak looks like water, it probably is. Air conditioning can sometimes drip water. If everything else is working fine on your car, it’s probably fine.
