- Injector doesn’t open – can be caused by rust or a broken spring. Gasoline can then leak; you might well smell this problem
- Clogging – often by dust, debris or rust again. Your injectors can’t then supply enough gas to the intake manifold
- Excessive dirt – this can be fuel additive residue which burns and becomes crusty, often reducing effective output
